Our family

The Optimiste story began in the late 1990s, when Steve and Sharlene took a leap of faith on a bare block of land just outside Mudgee, nestled among the rolling hills of New South Wales’ Central Tablelands. With vision, grit and a whole lot of optimism, they planted the first vines—laying the foundation for what would become not only a vineyard, but the bud of a bigger story. As the seasons passed, the land began to flourish, bringing with it the first harvests and soon the arrival of a Marcus, followed shortly by Helena, the next generation to grow along with the vines.

Over a quarter of a century on, Optimiste is a proud family business. What began as a small vineyard on a hillside has evolved into a diverse mixed farming enterprise. Along with  our wine production, we raise Poll Hereford cattle and White Dorper sheep, embracing diversity as a cornerstone of our brand.

Our approach to agriculture is grounded in sustainability and guided by a deep respect for natural systems and care of the land. By integrating livestock with vineyard practices, we create a more balanced, resilient and regenerative farm—where cattle contribute to soil health, nutrient cycling and biodiversity. This holistic approach allows us to reduce reliance on synthetic inputs while strengthening the long-term health of our land.

More than a place of production, our farm is a place where life unfolds. It’s in the long days, shared meals, changing seasons and quiet moments that the true character of Optimiste is formed. Every bottle we produce is a reflection of our journey—an invitation to slow down, to connect and to share in something meaningful.

With a vision for a healthier, more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable future, we remain committed to our role as custodians of the land and carers of our livestock. We respect our community and are grateful to those who enjoy our wines and produce.
